Ask HN: A better video player to learn stuff?

I learn from videos and online courses a lot these days, and I'm perpetually frustrated by the poor UX of the video players they use. Pause something and the entire screen gets a black half-fade overlay, the pause and navigate controls now cover exactly the things I'm trying to get a better look at, can't zoom, scrolling/scrubbing is painful, changing/switching between playback speeds is cumbersome, no bookmarking inside videos, ... I understand all of these when it's about watching a movie, but none of them make sense to watch tutorials or other content that needs frequent pause/replay. So, does anyone know of a better solution?

Download the video and/or find the m3u8 and stream it via VLC?
